Canadian scientists recently announced that simple eye scans could help predict a person's risk of developing heart disease and how quickly they are biologically aging. These individuals also exhibited biological signs of accelerated aging, such as increased inflammation and reduced life expectancy. Scientists hope that in the near future, a single retinal scan could provide a quick and accessible way to measure both aging and cardiovascular health risks. Researchers from Mass Eye and Ear, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard found significant associations between the thinning of different retinal layers and an increased risk of ocular, cardiac, pulmonary, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric diseases. This study, involving 44,823 participants, highlighted that retinal imaging could predict the future risk of both eye and systemic diseases.^{[8][9][10][11]} Earlier research from 2022 also introduced the concept of a "retinal age gap." This gap is the difference between a person's predicted retinal age and their chronological age. This "retinal age gap" was linked to an increased risk of mortality and cardiovascular disease.
