Giant crocodylians, including the formidable 7-meter-long Purussaurus, were the apex predators in South America's vast wetlands more than 10 million years ago. New research confirms these colossal reptiles dominated the food chain during the Miocene epoch, actively hunting massive plant-eating mammals. Their powerful presence shaped ancient ecosystems in a way modern mammalian carnivores do today.
Ancient Wetlands Ruled by Giant Reptiles
During the Miocene epoch, roughly 10.5 to 16 million years ago, a massive lake and wetland system called the Pebas megawetland covered much of northwestern South America. This watery landscape was home to an extraordinary array of life, but none were more fearsome than the giant crocodylians. These ancient relatives of modern caimans and alligators grew to immense sizes, far surpassing their living counterparts.[phys+3]
One of the most impressive was Purussaurus neivensis. This particular species reached lengths of about 7 meters (23 feet) and weighed an estimated 1,800 kilograms (4,000 pounds). Other species within the Purussaurus genus, like Purussaurus brasiliensis, were even larger. Some estimates suggest P. brasiliensis could grow up to 12.5 meters (41 feet) long and weigh around 8.4 metric tons (9.3 short tons). These giants had a mean daily food intake of about 40.6 kilograms (90 pounds). Their bite force was astonishing, capable of generating up to 69,000 Newtons, or about 7 metric tons-force. Another significant giant was Gryposuchus, an extinct genus of gavialid crocodilian, often called a "hooked crocodile" due to its distinctive snout. Gryposuchus croizati is believed to have reached lengths of up to 10 meters (33 feet) and weighed over 1,700 kilograms. Fossils of Gryposuchus have been found across a wide area, including Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and the Peruvian Amazon, showing its widespread success during the Miocene.[dinosaur-protection-group+5]
A Land of Giants and Fierce Competition
The Miocene South American wetlands were teeming with colossal plant-eating animals. These included giant ground sloths, heavily armored glyptodonts (relatives of armadillos), and various groups of hoofed mammals such as astrapotheres (dubbed "lightning beasts") and toxodontids. Some of these herbivores weighed more than a tonne. Specific examples of prey include the rhinoceros-sized Pericotoxodon platignathus, which weighed between 931 and 982 kilograms, and two elephant-like herbivores, Xenastrapotherium kraglievichi and Granastrapotherium snorki.[phys+10]
While other predators also roamed this ancient landscape, the crocodylians held the top spot. Competing carnivores included giant anacondas, saber-toothed marsupials, large flightless "terror birds" (phorusrachids), and sebecids, which were terrestrial relatives of crocodylians. However, a recent study concluded that mammalian predators alone could not have consumed all the available prey. This left a crucial ecological niche for the giant crocodylians, allowing them to become the region's most important predators, especially when hunting large prey.[phys+13]
"There was so much prey available that mammalian predators couldn't have eaten it all," said Oscar Wilson, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki. He explained, "Our new study shows that crocodylians in particular were the region's most important predators, especially when it came to hunting large prey."[phys+10]
Uncovering the Past: Fossil Evidence
Scientists confirmed the dominant role of these giant crocodylians by analyzing fossilized bones from museum collections. Researchers specifically looked for bite marks and tooth traces on the remains of herbivores. These marks provide direct evidence of predator-prey interactions, offering a clear picture of who was hunting whom millions of years ago.[phys+7]
The team, including Dr. Wilson, found frequent bite marks consistent with those made by Purussaurus on these fossils. For instance, a partial skull of Pericotoxodon platignathus showed a large, nearly circular puncture mark, about 30 millimeters across, matching the ridged teeth of a large crocodile. Another fossil, a partial upper leg bone, displayed five punctures surrounded by radiating cracks, indicating immense force applied to fresh bone.[knowridge+5]
These findings bolster earlier theories that suggested giant crocodylians and other reptiles filled the ecological role that large mammalian carnivores, like lions and bears, occupy on other continents today. By regularly hunting large herbivores, Purussaurus and other giant crocodylians likely helped control their populations and shaped the entire food web of the Miocene wetlands.[sci+3]
The End of an Era
The reign of these giant crocodylians in South America eventually came to an end. The high diversity of crocodile species, which saw up to 14 species living in the region at one time, including at least seven in the same geographic area, disappeared around 5 million years ago. This extinction event is likely linked to significant environmental changes during the late Miocene and Pliocene epochs.[uab+1]
The vast wetland systems, such as the Pebas and Acre mega-wetland systems, began to transition into a fluvial-dominated system, with changes in watercourses possibly caused by the uplift of the Andes mountains. These geological and climatic shifts led to the demise of the specialized wetland habitats that supported these colossal predators and their prey, favoring smaller species more resilient to ecological changes. Millions of years before modern South America took shape, its tropical wetlands were firmly under the control of these formidable, giant crocodylians.[uab+4]
