A deep-water coral reef off the coast of Benin, West Africa, long thought dead since the 1960s, has been rediscovered thriving more than 50 meters (164 feet) below the ocean surface. Instead of a lifeless area, the team discovered a healthy marine ecosystem teeming with fish and coral species. This newly found reef is a mesophotic coral ecosystem, a type of reef that grows deeper than typical shallow coral reefs. These corals still require sunlight to survive but have adapted to the low-light conditions found far below the ocean surface. The underwater survey positively identified at least eight different coral types and eight different species of fish living among them. Fish species spotted included golden African snappers, blackbar soldierfish, Guinean angelfish, West African goatfish, the Monrovia doctorfish, three-banded butterflyfish, and two species of damselfish. This discovery marks the first confirmed record of a living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Guinea.
