Vodafone Idea, India's third-largest telecom operator, significantly reduced its net loss in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, reporting a loss of ₹3,754 crore for the period ending June 30, 2026. This marks a substantial improvement from the ₹6,608 crore loss recorded in the same quarter last year. The company also saw its revenue from operations increase by 6% year-on-year to ₹11,689 crore.
Improved Financials and Subscriber Growth
The telecom provider's operating performance showed notable gains, with Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation, and Amortisation (EBITDA) rising 9.1% year-on-year to ₹5,034 crore. This pushed the EBITDA margin to 43.1%, up from 41.8% in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year. While thecompany reported a net loss this quarter, it is important to note that the preceding quarter (Q4 FY26) had shown an exceptional profit of ₹51,970 crore due to a significant one-time accounting gain of ₹57,491 crore related to government adjusted gross revenue (AGR) relief. The current quarter also included a one-time gain of ₹1,611 crore.[upstox+8]
Vodafone Idea achieved a significant milestone by adding subscribers for the first time since its merger in August 2018. The total customer base grew to 193.1 million in Q1 FY27, up from 192.8 million in the previous quarter. This positive subscriber growth signals a potential shift after years of market share challenges. The company's average revenue per user (ARPU), a key metric for telecom firms, also saw a robust increase of 10.2% year-on-year, reaching ₹195. This ARPU growth was the highest in the industry for the quarter, driven by users migrating to higher-value 4G and 5G services. The 4G and 5G subscriber base expanded to 130.1 million from 127.4 million in Q1 FY26.[ndtvprofit+15]
Network Expansion and Strategic Investments
The company continues to focus heavily on expanding its network infrastructure, particularly for 5G services. Vodafone Idea has rolled out 5G coverage to over 200 cities across 17 key circles where it holds 5G spectrum. Alongside the 5G deployment, the company is also investing in strengthening its high-speed broadband network. It added over 15,600 new unique broadband towers over the last twelve months, bringing the total unique broadband tower count to nearly 205,000. As of June 2026, Vodafone Idea's 4G population coverage reached 87.0%.[upstox+2]
Capital expenditure (capex) for the first quarter stood at ₹1,930 crore. This is part of a larger strategic investment plan, with the company already placing capex orders worth ₹9,000 crore out of its three-year capex guidance of ₹45,000 crore. These investments are crucial for the company to enhance its network capabilities and compete effectively in the intensely competitive Indian telecom market.[upstox+8]
Funding and Future Outlook
Vodafone Idea has made progress in securing necessary funding to support its expansion plans and address its debt. The company has secured ₹6,400 crore in funding, which includes warrants, as well as fund-based and non-fund-based facilities. Discussions with lenders are ongoing to finalize the overall funding plan. As of June 30, 2026, the company's debt from banks stood at ₹211 crore. Its cash and bank balance improved to ₹6,558 crore, partly due to proceeds from warrant issuance during the quarter.[upstox+8]
Abhijit Kishore, CEO of Vodafone Idea, expressed confidence in the company's direction. "Our robust Q1FY27 performance is a strong validation of our defined strategy and disciplined execution," Kishore said, adding that "FY27 is the year of execution for the company."
